1、 Differences in raw materials

The raw materials for PVC production by ethylene process are ethylene, chlorine, etc. the cost of ethylene accounts for about 65% of the cost of PVC by ethylene process. Therefore, the cost of PVC production by ethylene process mainly depends on the price of crude oil.

The raw materials for PVC production by calcium carbide process are calcium carbide, hydrogen chloride, electricity, etc. the cost of calcium carbide accounts for about 70% of the cost of PVC by calcium carbide process, while the main cost of calcium carbide production is the cost of electricity. Therefore, the cost of PVC production by calcium carbide process mainly depends on the electricity price.

 

2、 Price difference

Affected by China's energy structure, China's PVC is mainly based on calcium carbide process. The price trends of the two methods are basically the same. The trend of ethylene method is greatly affected by the trend of calcium carbide method. The price of ethylene method is generally higher than that of calcium carbide method due to its advantages in raw materials and process.


3、 Performance differences

   1). The molecular weight of calcium carbide PVC resin is lower than that of ethylene PVC resin, and its molecular weight distribution is wider than that of ethylene PVC resin.

   2). The plasticizing performance of PVC dry mix by calcium carbide method is better than that of PVC dry mix by ethylene method


4、 Differences in application areas

The application fields of ethylene resin and calcium carbide resin are not very different, but the process routes are different. Calcium carbide resin is mainly used for pipes and building materials, while ethylene resin is mainly used for high-grade profiles, transparent sheets, films and interior decoration products in the automotive industry (such as roof lining, carpet, inner skin, insulating pipes, refueling funnel, door trim strip, bellows, sealing strip, seats, instrument panel skin and other products). The quality indexes of VCM products obtained from the two raw material routes of calcium carbide method and ethylene method are compared and analyzed. VCM produced by ethylene method contains slightly more impurities than that produced by calcium carbide method.  However, it is generally recognized in the industry that the quality of PVC by ethylene method is directly affected by calcium carbide method in the application field of calcium carbide resin in high-end products.
